about

DE LICEIRAS 18 is an experimental and independent space coordinated by artists. It is located in the historic centre of Porto, in a former residential building. Every month it hosts a group of artists who form a dynamic and constantly renewed temporary community. It is also used as a platform for spontaneous collaboration, technical development, experimental music sessions, reading groups, improvised performances, group cooking, etc. The space opens its doors to flexible proposals, but also requires responsible and committed participation by all residents.

Recipients

Visual artists, designers, gardeners, writers, sound creators, improvisational singers, performers, philosophers... excited by the idea of living in a micro artistic community based on exchange, without hesitating to break down barriers between private and public, to live and create in the same space - an informal, experimental, no-budget and anti “white cube” space.

Selection

The DE LICEIRAS 18 community can be found in a typical, old two-storey town house, in the city centre, that appears to be organically adapted for the shape of city itself. There are no dominant perpendicular lines and the floors are almost sloping. Everyday sounds of the city can be heard outside. The entrance to the building is hidden in a small alley, away from the gaze of tourists and full of the vibrant life of the local inhabitants. The reality of this street is made even more curious by the combination of neighbours: an old cobbler's workshop, a bikers club and a traditional tavern. The building's other wall, in turn, faces a brothel.
